Donte Rhodes could do no wrong. It didn’t matter if it was a quarterback draw, read option, designed run or the protection broke down and the Valley West junior had to make something out of nothing. Whenever Rhodes had the ball in his hands, there was little the Abington Heights defense could do to slow him down Friday night at Wyoming Valley West Stadium.

While the Comets were able to keep Rhodes at bay through the air, keeping the junior signal-caller to just three yards on three completions, the Spartan did all of his damage on the ground. Rhodes, who was game’s leading rusher, ran for 185 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries.

In fact, Rhodes was a catalyst on all three of Valley West’s (2-6) touchdown drives, en route to a 21-13 victory over Abington Heights (1-7) on the Spartans’ senior night.

“I have to give all my credit to my line. They did a great job blocking today,” Rhodes said. “Everything was just open. I hit the hole.

“It really feels good — knowing I just came back and this is my first time playing a full game (in a while). It feels good to get a win for the seniors.”

Rhodes’ lone score of the game came midway through the second quarter when he capped off a 13-play, 73-yard scoring drive. The quarterback carried the ball five times for 38 yards on the drive, including a 5-yard designed run for the score.

Rhodes collected chunk plays with his feet on the Spartans’ remaining scoring drives, as well.

He ran for 40 yards on the Spartans’ first scoring drive, along with a 7-yard strike to Nah-syr Garner, and opened the second half with a 61-yard run up the middle. Senior fullback Brendan Woods scored from 10 yards out a player later to put the Spartans up 21-7 with 11:21 remaining in the third quarter.

A 1-yard touchdown run by Brendan Woods got things started for Valley West (3-7). Despite missing the extra point, the Spartans got it back early in the second quarter when Dontae Rhodes scored on a keeper and Woods picked up the two-point conversion for a 14-0 lead.

Zack McDaniels scored from 5 yards out later in the quarter to make it 21-0. Williamsport scored before halftime to pull within 21-7 at the break and then found the end zone again midway through the third quarter to make it a one-score game.

That’s as close as the Millionaires (3-7) would get, and the Spartans would tack on a late touchdown in the fourth to put the game away.
